Whether your a thrill seeker or a 50 Pass participant this is your ride but either way you should have a strong stomach and a comfort level for heights and twisties. We start the day in Castle Rock, Colorado with breakfast at the historic B&B diner with $4 biscuits and gravy and a couple cups of coffee. With a stomachs full we head out looking for US 285 heading south out of Denver here we hit our first few passes namely Kenosha and Red Hill Pass but be on the look out and be careful of traffic. We continue on 285 until Fairplay here we take a right on state highway 9 north toward Alma as we climb up on Hoosier pass and drop into Breckenridge. We continue onward to Interstate 70 and head west looking for Vail Pass which will be on the right hand side and ride on to Minturn where we head south again on US Route 24 and Tennessee Pass and have lunch in historic mining town of Leadville. We won't hang out here long before we rush onward to state highway 9 north and roll over Fremont pass and that will be the sixth pass of the day. We have one to go as we make our way onto Interstate 70 now heading east and looking for US route 6 to ride over our final pass Loveland. . |

This is one fantastic journey through Colorado as our route starts from Colorado Springs on state highway 115 toward Canon City. While in Canyon City you might consider the Prisons Museum, Royal Gorge or historic Buckskin Joe's but don't linger too long as you will need the time to enjoy the ride between Canon City and Salida. on US Route 50 heading west as this road has plenty of curves and is paralleled by the Arkansas river! In Salida you might stop off the main drag in town for lunch at the Butchers Table or on the river at the Boathouse Cantina. We can't dally long however as we need to press on through Poncha Springs and on to South Fork. Once in South Fork we refuel and this is truly where the gem of this ride starts as we head north on the "Silver Thread Highway" or state highway 149 north toward the historic mining town of Creede, Colorado. Let me try and explain this route...first you will borough through Pines and Aspens on both sides on a twisting well groomed road with a few gentle winding curves while the mountains are truly tower you on both sides. As you begin to close in to Creede the mountains shrink in the distance and the expanse opens to a great plain that in May through July is set in a deep green. Creede is a blink of an eye small town and offers a Underground Mining Museum and a quaint little store fronts. Don't think for a second the best of this ride is over as some of the best is still ahead with Lake City clearly in our sites. continuing on 149 north you will cross the RIO Grande headwaters at least 3 times in some of the best curves and scenery Colorado has to offer, if your a 50 Pass participant be looking for Slumgullion Pass sign and get ready for some very tight curves that almost completely over lap as we descend into Lake City. You know your closing in as the Cotton Woods begin to tower above you...Please plan on staying awhile here and say hello to long time supporters of the Colorado Victory Riders Association Jim and Nita Arnold at Pleasant View resort. Make sure though you book early for a cabin. Lake City has a varied history and one of the most memorable characters is Alferd Packer...do your own research and stop for dining at Poker Alice. In the morning consider the Lake City Bakery before returning home or continuing toward your journey. |
