Westcliffe Ride

A nice ride with lots of twisties that heads SSW from Colorado Springs across the Arkansas Valley and up through Hardscrabble Canyon in the San Isabel National Forest to the town of Westcliffe.  There’s an awesome view of the Sagre de Cristo Mountains in the distance as you start down into the Wet Mountain Valley and Westcliffe.  Westcliffe has a few interesting places to have lunch, and don’t forget to fuel up before heading out.  The second half of the ride travels north through the Wet Mountain Valley and meets up with the Arkansas River; then goes through the rolling hills west of Cripple Creek and through the Florissant Fossil Beds Memorial Monument to Florissant.  From there, it’s due East back to Colorado Springs.

Total distance = approximately 200 miles.

Details: From Colorado Springs, head south on Hwy 115 to Florence.  In Florence, take a left onto Hwy 67 towards Wetmore.  In Wetmore, take a right onto Hwy 96.  Follow 96 all the way to Westcliffe for lunch and gas.  From Westcliffe, head north along Hwy 69 until you reach Texas Creek and Hwy 50.  Turn right onto Hwy 50 and go approximately 16 miles until you hit Hwy 9.  If you see the signs for Buckskin Joe's, you've gone too far.  Turn left (north) onto Hwy 9 and follow it until you see the sign for Guffey (approximately 21 miles).  Turn right, go through Guffey, then continue 15 miles to Road S.  Turn left onto Road S and follow it until it ends at Cripple Creek-Florissant Rd (County Road 1).  Turn left onto CR 1 and follow it all the way to Florissant and Hwy 24.  At this point, you might want to take a short break at the Thunderbird Inn on the corner.  Head East on Hwy 24 all the way back to Colorado Springs.
