A simple counter-clockwise loop through the Colorado high country and the Arkansas River valley. It has its fair share of twisties and rolling hills. The main features of this ride are the 3 mountain passes ranging from 9,165 ft. to 9,507 ft. in elevation that you go over on your way west, and a nice twisty ride along the Arkansas River valley on the way back east. If you’re looking for a nice leisurely ride and also enjoy the scenery at the same time, this is a good one.
Total distance = approximately 220 miles.
Details: From Colorado Springs, head west along Hwy 24. At approximately the 75 mile mark you’ll meet up with Hwy 285. Take Hwy 285/24 south until you reach a small town called Johnson Village. There, you can stop for lunch at the Coyote Cantina (north side of street). After fueling up, continue west ½ mile and take Hwy 285 south. Follow 285 to Hwy 50 and Poncha Springs. Turn left and head east on 50. Follow 50 along the Arkansas River valley until you reach Cañon City. You can stop here for a quick drink of water (or whatever) or you can continue another 10 miles until you reach Hwy 115. Turn left (north) onto 115 and follow it back to Colorado Springs.
